Did You Know?
While the true origin of the American Bobtail is unknown, it is widely believed the breed is an offspring of a seal point Siamese female cat and a short-tailed brown tabby.
The American Bobtail is a medium sized cat with a fairly good build. Their hind legs are slightly longer than their forelegs. These cats have a dense, all weather double-coat along with slightly almond shaped hunter eyes, always keen for movement. The cat’s most prominent feature is its unusual tail. Though the tail is typically straight, some cats feature one with bumps or curves. No two tails are similar, and no length is preferred.
The breed undergoes slow maturation and takes about two to three years to reach its adult size. Most females are smaller as compared to male bobtail cats. The breed comes in two coat lengths: a medium longhair coat and a dense furry shorthair coat.
Personality and Temperament
American Bobtails are often compared to dogs because of their similar devotion and behavior. In fact, the breed also loves to spend time outdoors. Bobtails are among the few cat breeds that make excellent companions for long distance trekkers and travelers. These loyal cats are both active and affectionate in nature. Bobtails love to spend time with their owners and be petted.
They are also great with kids and enjoy playing games. If you are thinking of adopting this breed, stock up on toys and puzzles as this smart cat enjoys learning new tricks and playing fetch. The American Bobtail is not as loud as other breeds but still, manages to communicate well with occasional purrs and meows. The cat has an adaptable nature which instantly makes them a part of their new family.
Health and Care
Fortunately for pet owners, the American Bobtail’s coat does not tangle excessively as long as you comb and brush it a couple of times a week. However, the cat is prone to shed more during the spring and fall but the good news is a bath is rarely necessary for this breed.
Like most cat breeds, the American Bobtail is prone to periodontal diseases, hence pay special attention to your pet’s dental hygiene by brushing their teeth every day or at least once a week. To prevent eye infections, soak a piece of cloth in warm water and use it to dab the corner of the pet’s eyes to remove any discharge. Use a separate area of the cloth on each eye to prevent infection.
Check the ears after every few weeks for signs of infections. If the ear looks dirty, wipe it with a damp piece of cloth moistened with cider vinegar. Avoid using cotton swabs as it can potentially damage the interior of the ear. When adopting an American Bobtail kitten, look for a reputable breeder who offers proof the cat has been vaccinated for common disease and illnesses. Like other cats, the American Bobtail is prone to diseases but generally remains healthy.
To raise a healthy Bobtail, keep your cat indoors as much as possible, and provide them with scratching posts and acceptable surfaces for their natural behavior of scratching.
History and Background
The American Bobtail first made its appearance in, you guessed it, the US in the 1960s. While the real origin of the cat is unknown, it is widely believed the breed is an offspring of a seal point Siamese female cat and a short-tailed brown tabby.
These friendly cats will become the perfect addition to your family due to their amiable dispositions and caring nature towards children.
